To The Moon and Beyond
Remembering One of America’s Greatest Moments and Honoring NASA’s Legacy
As the granddaughter of a dedicated NASA operative, I can only imagine the awe my grandfather experienced and the pride he felt witnessing America accomplish that giant leap for mankind by landing on the Moon 50 years ago. The aeronautics pioneer has since set brazen goals to reach Mars and beyond, planning on establishing a permanent presence on the Moon in the near future. A seemingly improbable feat in 1969 is now well within grasp thanks to modern science and NASA’s advancing technology.
I may have been too young to remember my grandfather and his fantastical stories, but his legacy lives on in the countless men and women who continue to pave the way and serve as pioneers in space exploration. His legacy also lives on in my dad and myself with our unquenchable thirst for knowledge and, of course, astronomy—a gift from my grandfather no doubt.
While my dad chose a STEM field, I chose the path of a writer, reporter and investigator, working now for a public relations firm focused on high-tech and every industry it touches. In this field there is so much exposure to the unprecedented devices simplifying our lives and to the cutting-edge innovation coming down the pike that has the potential to alter the world in ways many cannot fathom.
Working for Global Results Communications, I am once again connected to NASA by our client BridgeComm, Inc., which began as an optical wireless communications (OWC) company serving the space ecosystem. Using the same technology NASA has relied on for decades, BridgeComm has since expanded to provide organizations worldwide with fast, secure, enterprise-grade broadband services for terrestrial and airborne applications. As the first company to commercialize OWC technology, the company is at the forefront of a new era.
We’ve come a long way, and in the decades since my grandfather was at NASA, the world has been transformed by wireless communications enabling among other life-changing inventions the smartphone, whose capabilities would have astounded him—and still amaze me.
With the future of 5G on the horizon, I have no idea where we will go, but I hope to continue my grandfather’s legacy by making thoughtful and meaningful contributions that have the same impact as his did half a century ago.
